With a height of 10.5 feet and a drainage area of 95 square miles, the dam has a storage capacity of 8,058 acre-feet and a maximum discharge of 552 cubic feet per second. The dam is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and is not currently inspected by the state.
While North Pelican has a low hazard potential, it poses a very high risk due to its age and lack of recent condition assessment. The dam features a controlled spillway with a width of 20 feet and three slide gates for water release. The Emergency Action Plan for the dam was last revised in December 2018, and although it meets guidelines, detailed inundation maps and risk management measures are yet to be prepared. Despite its risk level, North Pelican continues to provide flood risk reduction and hydroelectric power to the region.
