Flambeau, also known as Dairyland Reservoir, is a captivating hydroelectric dam located in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. Built in 1951 by Fargo Engineering, this gravity dam stands at a towering height of 92 feet and stretches for 4980 feet in length. With a maximum storage capacity of 47,167 acre-feet and a normal storage level of 43,500 acre-feet, Flambeau serves multiple purposes including flood risk reduction, fire protection, and recreation, in addition to generating hydroelectric power.

The dam's controlled spillway, with a width of 120 feet, ensures efficient water management during high flow events, while three Tainter (radial) gates control water release. Flambeau Dam is a key feature on the Flambeau River, with a drainage area of 1910 square miles and a maximum discharge capacity of 81,000 cubic feet per second. Despite its impressive engineering and functionality, the dam poses a high hazard potential, with a very high risk rating according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Maintained by the FERC, Flambeau Dam undergoes regular inspections to ensure its structural integrity and risk management measures are in place. With its scenic location and significant contributions to water resource management and energy production, Flambeau Dam stands as a testament to human ingenuity in harnessing the power of nature for multiple beneficial purposes.
