Winter is a gravity dam located on the East Fork Chippewa River in Sawyer, Wisconsin, with a primary purpose of hydroelectric power generation. Built in 1952, Winter stands at a height of 9 feet and has a hydraulic height of 25 feet, providing a normal storage capacity of 300 acre-feet. The dam, designed by Herman T. Hagestan, spans 145 feet in length and has a controlled spillway width of 138 feet.
Managed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Winter offers multiple benefits including fish and wildlife pond creation, recreational opportunities, and power generation. The dam has a low hazard potential and a very high risk assessment rating, indicating the importance of proper risk management measures. With a well-maintained slide gate system for water release control, Winter plays a crucial role in water resource management and climate sustainability in the region.
Although the condition assessment for Winter is currently not available, regular inspections are conducted to ensure the safety and functionality of the dam. The emergency action plan for the site was last revised in December 2020, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in case of any unforeseen events. As a key component of the water infrastructure in the area, Winter underscores the significance of responsible dam operation and maintenance for the protection of both the environment and surrounding communities.
