Benne, also known as Kossert 9-303-1, is a Federal-owned dam located in Moorcroft, Wyoming, along the Alkali Creek. Completed in 1940, this earth dam stands at a height of 33 feet and has a storage capacity of 322 acre-feet. The primary purposes of this dam are for fire protection, stock, and as a small fish pond.
Despite its low hazard potential, Benne is currently in poor condition according to a recent assessment in May 2021. The dam lacks outlet gates and has an uncontrolled spillway with a width of 20 feet. With a moderate risk rating of 3, there is a need for improved risk management measures to ensure the safety and integrity of this structure in the face of potential climate challenges and water resource management.
Given its critical role in the region, water resource and climate enthusiasts should be aware of the state-regulated status of Benne, as well as its inspection frequency of every 5 years. The dam is under the jurisdiction of the State Engineer's Office and falls within Congressional District 00, Wyoming, represented by Liz Cheney (R). As efforts are made to address the poor condition of Benne and mitigate potential risks, it serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining and monitoring our water infrastructure in the face of changing environmental conditions.
