Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect for the 3 day period. - Dry conditions most of the time but the could be an isolated thunderstorm Saturday evening. - Drier and breezier conditions today and Saturday will increase fire weather concerns. A Red Flag Warning is in effect today. && .DISCUSSION... WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW: An upper ridge over the western states will bring the heat back to the area through the weekend. A weak frontal system will help to bring west winds today. Abundant smoke from the Pacific NW fires will move into the forecast area today with reduced visibility. Will mention haze in the forecast to account for this. West winds will be strong enough this afternoon for a Lake Wind Advisory. Will expand the Extreme Heat Warning to include all areas. It looks like Saturday will be the hottest day with highs above 100 in most areas and a few locations like Glendive and Terry above 105 for highs. Heat impact level maps are recommending an Extreme Heat Warning for all areas on Saturday. To keep the headlines simple, will include all areas today through Sunday in the warning. Flow aloft turns SW Saturday afternoon and evening while a shortwave trough and weak cold front brings a chance for showers and thunderstorms Saturday evening. Highs on Sunday will only be a few degrees cooler with highs near 100. Will maintain Red Flag Warning for today. Will not include Saturday for now as winds are expected to be light. Fire weather issues may arise Sunday with higher winds and low humidity. However zones 136 and 137 may not have the wind to reach the criteria. The upper ridge next week tries to push east but an upper trough over the eastern US keeps it at bay. Expect a slight cooldown but temps will remain above normal with mainly dry conditions. FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS: Low confidence that there will be a thunderstorm somewhere in northeast Montana tonight, based on HREF. High confidence on breezy west winds on Friday and on the heat this weekend. && .AVIATION... FLIGHT CATEGORY: VFR most of the time. Smoke and haze may reduce visibility to MVFR at times. Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About White Butte Cross Country Ski Trails

Where does the snow data for White Butte Cross Country Ski Trails come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at White Butte Cross Country Ski Trails?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near White Butte Cross Country Ski Trails?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
