* WHAT...Dangerously cold wind chills of 20 to 40 below expected. * WHERE...Northern New York and Vermont. * WHEN...From 7 PM this evening to 1 PM EST Saturday. * IMPACTS...The dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 40 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes. This period of cold temperatures is particularly dangerous and well outside of typically experienced temperature conditions. Risk of hypothermia and frostbite is unusually high, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, those that do not have ready access to adequate heat, or are outdoors and not taking actions to mitigate these conditions. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Cold conditions will continue beyond 1 PM Saturday. A Cold Weather Advisory may be needed into Saturday night, especially for portions of the Adirondacks and Northeast Kingdom.
With an elevation of 4,736 feet (1,443 meters), it is one of the forty-six High Peaks that attract mountaineers and hikers from around the world. The mountain is known for its distinctive shape, resembling the profile of a gothic cathedral, which is where it gets its name.
During the winter season, Gothics experiences heavy snowfall due to its high elevation and location in the northeastern United States. The snowpack on the mountain can range from several feet to over ten feet, depending on weather conditions. It is a popular destination for winter mountaineering and backcountry skiing enthusiasts.
The mountain is surrounded by several creeks and rivers that provide a picturesque landscape and an important water source. Notably, the Ausable River, known for its excellent trout fishing, receives runoff from Gothics. Additionally, the mountain's melting snow contributes to the water flow in many other streams and rivers in the region.
As for its history and lore, Gothics has a fascinating past. The name "Gothics" was given to the mountain by early settlers who thought its striking profile resembled the Gothic architecture of medieval cathedrals. There are no specific legends or folklore associated with Gothics, but the mountain has played a significant role in the development of mountaineering in the Adirondacks. It has captivated explorers and adventurers for centuries, offering challenging routes and breathtaking vistas that continue to inspire outdoor enthusiasts to this day.
