The river is a tributary of the San Juan River, and is affected by numerous dams and diversions upstream. Seasonally, the snowmelt from the surrounding mountains causes the river to swell in the spring, with peak flows typically occurring in June. In addition to its hydrological variability, the Animas River is known for its distinct orange color caused by acid mine drainage from past mining activity in the area. Despite this, the river remains a popular destination for recreation, including fishing and rafting.
