The river flows through McPhee Reservoir and is regulated by the McPhee Dam. The seasonal trend of the river is high flow during the spring runoff and lower flow during the summer months. One interesting fact is that the Dolores River was the subject of a major controversy in the 1980s when the federal government proposed to build two dams that would have flooded the Dolores Canyon. This controversy led to the creation of the Dolores River Boating Advocates, which successfully fought to preserve the river's wild and scenic values.
