The river is fed by several tributaries, including the Salt Fork and the Kaskaskia Rivers. There are no major dams on the Sangamon River at Monticello, but there are several smaller ones that contribute to its flow. The river tends to have higher flows in the spring due to snowmelt and precipitation, and lower flows in the summer and fall. Interestingly, the Sangamon River was once home to a variety of freshwater mussels, but many of these species have declined due to pollution and habitat destruction.
