The river's main constituents include agricultural runoff and urban stormwater. There are no significant tributaries or dams in the area that impact the Sangamon River's flow. The river experiences high flows during the spring and early summer due to snowmelt and spring rainfall. In contrast, low flows occur during the summer and fall due to decreased rainfall and increased evapotranspiration. Interestingly, the Sangamon River was named after a Pottawatomie Indian chief and has been the subject of several poems by Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay.
