Walden Pond Dam, located in Shawnee, Kansas, is a privately owned earth dam that was completed in 1937 for the primary purpose of recreation.
This dam stands at a height of 24 feet and has a hydraulic height of 24 feet, with a structural height of 25 feet. It spans a length of 500 feet and has a maximum storage capacity of 58.6 acre-feet, providing water for recreational use on its 5-acre surface area.
Despite being a source of recreation, Walden Pond Dam has a high hazard potential and is categorized as having a fair condition assessment. The dam is located on the Little Mill Creek-TR river/stream and is under state jurisdiction with permitting, inspection, and enforcement in place. An uncontrolled spillway measuring 30 feet wide serves as a safety measure for managing excess water flow, with a maximum discharge capacity of 917.7 cubic feet per second.
Although Walden Pond Dam has been inspected as of August 2011, there is a moderate risk associated with the dam's operation. With a risk management plan in place, this dam continues to provide recreational opportunities while also highlighting the importance of maintaining and monitoring water resources for climate resilience and public safety.
