Koenig-Elton F Area, also known as Koenig-Elton Dam, is a privately owned structure located in Becker, Minnesota. Built in 1966 by the USDA NRCS, this earth dam serves multiple purposes including fire protection, stock and small fish pond, as well as fish and wildlife habitat enhancement. Situated in the vicinity of the Buffalo River tributary, this dam has a height of 8 feet and a storage capacity of 248 acre-feet, with a normal storage level of 90 acre-feet.
The dam's low hazard potential and moderate risk assessment make it a crucial asset for the surrounding ecosystem and community. With a spillway width of 15 feet and uncontrolled outlet gates, the dam ensures proper water management and flood control in the area. While it has not yet been rated for its condition assessment, the dam continues to contribute to the conservation efforts in the region by providing a safe and reliable habitat for fish and wildlife.
Despite not being under state jurisdiction or regulatory oversight, Koenig-Elton F Area remains a significant feature in the landscape of Minnesota. Its prime location, close to Audubon, and its design by the Natural Resources Conservation Service highlight its importance in maintaining the ecological balance and enhancing recreational opportunities in the area. As water resource and climate enthusiasts, this dam serves as a reminder of the vital role that such structures play in preserving our natural environment for future generations.
