Clearwater Dam, also known as Clearwater Lake, is a Federal-owned structure located in Leeper, Missouri, within the Black River watershed.
Completed in 1942 by the US Army Corps of Engineers, this Earth-type dam stands at 154 feet high and spans 4,225 feet in length, with a capacity to hold 413,000 acre-feet of water. Its primary purpose is flood risk reduction, with recreational opportunities also available.
With a high hazard potential, Clearwater Dam is equipped with an uncontrolled spillway and has a maximum discharge capacity of 310,000 cubic feet per second. The dam's risk management measures include continual monitoring, prioritized maintenance activities, and engagement with local emergency managers to raise awareness and develop emergency plans. Despite the dam's efforts to control flooding risks, severe weather events can still pose challenges, highlighting the importance of ongoing risk assessment and preparedness efforts.
