The lake was created in 1968 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control and water supply purposes. The hydrology of the lake is fed by the Lampasas and Leon Rivers and has a surface area of 6,430 acres. The lake provides water to the cities of Killeen, Harker Heights, and Belton. The snowpack that feeds the lake comes from the northern parts of Texas and the Rocky Mountains. The agricultural use around the lake includes cattle grazing and row crops.
