Swope No. 2 is a privately owned earth dam located in Niobrara, Wyoming, along the Shirral Draw river. Completed in 1953 for irrigation purposes, this dam stands at a height of 26 feet and has a storage capacity of 114 acre-feet. Despite its significant role in facilitating irrigation in the region, the dam is currently rated as having a poor condition, with a low hazard potential.

The dam features a slide (sluice gate) outlet gate and an uncontrolled spillway, with a structural height of 25 feet and a hydraulic height of 21 feet. The last inspection in June 2019 revealed the dam's poor condition, prompting the need for maintenance and possible rehabilitation efforts. Despite its risk assessment rating of moderate (3), the dam's hazard potential remains low, providing a unique opportunity for proactive risk management measures to be implemented to ensure the safety and longevity of this vital water resource infrastructure.

With its location in a Congressional District represented by Liz Cheney (R) and under the regulatory jurisdiction of the Wyoming State Engineer's Office, Swope No. 2 serves as a vital component of the local water resource infrastructure. As water resource and climate enthusiasts, it is essential for stakeholders to stay informed about the condition and management of dams like Swope No. 2 to ensure sustainable water utilization and resilience in the face of changing climate patterns.
