Buttermilk Resort -- Michigan ski resort
Buttermilk Resort Michigan
About this resort

Buttermilk Resort

Buttermilk Resort is a small ski resort in Ontario with five trails, all accessible by chairlift or tow rope. The best trails for intermediate to advanced skiers are the Upper and Lower Buttermilk, which offer challenging runs with steep pitches and mogul fields. For beginner skiers, the T-Bar trail is a great option, with gentle slopes and wide runs. An interesting fact about Buttermilk Resort is that it was originally a dairy farm, and the ski lodge is housed in the old barn. For apres ski, the Barrie country club is a popular choice, with a cozy fireplace and live music on weekends.

Terrain mix: Buttermilk Resort is not a ski resort in Canada. It is actually a ski resort located in Aspen, Colorado, United States. The resort is part of the larger Aspen Snowmass ski area.

The ski resort is known for its family-friendly atmosphere and beginner-friendly terrain. It is located at the base of Buttermilk Mountain, which is one of the four mountains that make up the Aspen Snowmass ski area. Buttermilk Mountain has a summit elevation of 9,900 feet and offers a variety of terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

Other notable mountains in the Aspen Snowmass ski area include Aspen Mountain, Snowmass Mountain, and Highlands Mountain. Each mountain offers unique terrain and breathtaking views for visitors to enjoy.

921 FXUS63 KAPX 060623 AFDAPX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 223 AM EDT Thu Aug 6 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Shower/ thunderstorm chances continue into today, locally heavy rain remains possible across northeast Lower. - Seasonable temperatures persist through the end of the week with occasional shower chances as we head into the weekend into early next week. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 217 AM EDT Thu Aug 6 2026 Cold front will continue its slow progression across Michigan, bringing additional rounds of showers and perhaps some embedded thunderstorms. Guidance continues to suggest the front will track southeastward, but perhaps it may stall near Saginaw Bay? However, precipitation should diminish/ move largely out of the area by at least early afternoon if not sooner (some lingering chances near Saginaw Bay if the front does stall in that vicinity as being advertised). Northeast Lower, remains the area most favored for more locally heavy rainfall today, where more rounds of showers look to track across the region into perhaps the early afternoon, especailly far southeast areas near Saginaw Bay. Locations across northeast Lower have reported receiving around roughly 1 to 2 inches from last evening/ last nights showers. A few showers look possible Friday afternoon/evening mainly across northeast Lower between the departing front and the next incoming disturbance. Forecast thinking beyond Friday remains largely unchanged. A broader longwave trough is still expected to become established across the Great Lakes through the weekend and into early next week, keeping any meaningful heat displaced to our south while maintaining a generally west to northwest flow aloft. Within that flow, subtle shortwaves are expected to rotate through the region, although confidence remains fairly low regarding the exact timing and placement of these disturbances. As a result, maintaining periodic chances for showers and a few thunderstorms from Friday night through Monday. Temperatures are expected to remain seasonably cool for early August, though highs could trend a bit lower should a more persistent cloud cover and showery scenario ultimately materializes. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z FRIDAY/... Issued at 222 AM EDT Thu Aug 6 2026 ...Areas of IFR/LIFR Cigs and Vsbys Overnight... Plenty of low level moisture in place tonight after Wednesday`s rain, resulting in areas of IFR/LIFR Cigs and Vsbys with fog/stratus. Conditions will improve Thursday morning, with sunshine and drier weather. && .APX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... MI...None. MARINE...None. && $$ DISCUSSION...NSC AVIATION...JK

Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Buttermilk Resort

Where does the snow data for Buttermilk Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Buttermilk Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Buttermilk Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
