Some storms could be severe or produce heavy rainfall. && .UPDATE... /Issued Issued by National Weather Service Missoula MT/ A front has swept through much of the area this evening., resulting in a northwesterly wind shift. Remaining areas where the front has not gone through will see the threat for strong wind gusts from showers and storms persist for another hour or two. The update adds some shower mentions on the plains east of a Havre to Lewistown line for a couple more hours. No other changes were made at this time. -AM && .DISCUSSION... /Issued Issued by National Weather Service Missoula MT/ - Meteorological Overview: The summer time upper level ridge of high pressure that has developed over the Western US, will generally reside over the Western US over the next week or so, just varying in how high of an amplitude it gets over Montana. The amplitude of the ridge will have some determination on hot it gets daily over the CWA. For tonight, a weak upper level disturbance will move from southeast to northeast through the CWA. Because max temps this afternoon will be in the mid 90s, there is some potential some storms could produce strong wind gusts. For Mon through next Sun...max daily afternoon temperatures will generally be above normal most days. Afternoon temperatures should not be quite as hot as this past weekend, but still very warm most days. There will also be daily chances for showers/thunderstorms as upper level disturbances rotate around the upper level ridge. Some of the storms could be severe with isolated heavy rainfall possible from some storms as well. - Forecast Confidence & Scenarios: With inverted V soundings this afternoon, any down drafts from thunderstorms could produce strong wind gusts. Thus a marginal for severe storms was placed for areas around Chinook and Harlem. Brusda && .AVIATION... 13/06Z TAF Period A southwesterly flow aloft will stream variable mid to high level clouds and moisture across the region with VFR conditions prevailing. A few light showers with VFR cloud bases remain possible tonight, mainly across western portions of north-central MT. On Monday, widely scattered shower and thunderstorm development is expected across southwest MT in the afternoon with gusty showers/thunderstorms tracking northeast into central/north- central MT Monday evening. Gusty northwest surface winds across eastern portions of north-central MT and at some SW MT terminals initially tonight will decrease with mainly light winds by 10z. Surface winds become east to southeasterly at terminals on Monday. Hoenisch && .HYDROLOGY... The main thunderstorm concern for Tue through Thu will be the potential that some storms produce very heavy rainfall. Precipitable water is forecast to range from 1.50 to 2 inches. This would result in some storms producing very heavy rainfall in a short time. Thus much of the CWA is a marginal risk for flash flooding for later this week. Additionally, the heavy rainfall could cause additional impacts on burn scars, particularly the Horse Gulch burn area. Brusda && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Hidden Valley

Where does the snow data for Hidden Valley come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Hidden Valley?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Hidden Valley?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
