210 FXUS63 KBIS 140638 AFDBIS Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Bismarck ND 138 AM CDT Tue Jul 14 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Very hot temperatures continue through at least Thursday across southwest and south central North Dakota. - Cooler, but still near to above average temperatures across northern North Dakota Tuesday through the end of the work week. - Low to medium chances for thunderstorms Tuesday night into Wednesday across far northern North Dakota. && .UPDATE... Issued at 134 AM CDT Tue Jul 14 2026 The Extreme Heat Warning has expired for all counties along and north of Highway 2. However, McKenzie, McLean, Sheridan, Wells, and Foster Counties have been appended to the extension of the Extreme Heat Warning that remains in effect until 10 PM CDT Tuesday evening. The decision to add these counties was driven by the latest NBM- based maximum heat indices around 100 to 105 (which would make Tuesday the 4th consecutive day they have been at least this high), lows tonight around 70, and the daily maximum wet-bulb globe temperature risk remaining in the High to Extreme categories. UPDATE Issued at 1018 PM CDT Mon Jul 13 2026 Quiet weather continues with temperatures gradually lowering. No changes needed to the forecast at this time. UPDATE Issued at 659 PM CDT Mon Jul 13 2026 The hot weather continues, but temperatures are starting to drop off, as we are now 98 in Bismarck after topping out at 105. A frontal boundary continues to drop south through central North Dakota, with winds shifting northerly and becoming a bit gusty in its wake. Boundary will continue its slow southward sag before stalling out late tonight/early Tuesday morning. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 249 PM CDT Mon Jul 13 2026 An upper level ridge continues to dominate the upper level pattern across western and central CONUS. This ridge has brought widespread hot temperatures into the Northern Plains. The low level thermal ridge is centered across eastern Montana and western North Dakota. This will cause temperatures to warm across southwestern and south central North Dakota to around 100 to 106 degrees this afternoon. The rest of the state is forecast to be in the 90s to around 100. The central and eastern half of the state has dew points in the 60s to lower 70s leading to heat index values of 105 to 110. There is also another chance of breaking record high temperatures for Bismarck, Dickinson, and Minot today. There is a back door cold front entering the region mainly in the northwest keeping temperatures in the lower 90s. Tonight low temperatures are forecast to drop down around 70s potentially being record high low temperatures. The aforementioned cold front will bring cooler temperatures across the northern half of the state through the week so heat headlines will expire north tonight. While the southern half will remain hot, thus heat headlines were extended through Wednesday evening and likely will be need across the south Thursday. The upper level ridge will dampen this week across the Canadian Prairies. This will lead to multiple waves traversing across southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba. There are low chances of showers and thunderstorms by the middle of the week along the International Border. Then low chance this weekend as the upper level ridge could regress a bit westward placing the Northern Plains in the northwesterly flow aloft. With all of that said, the upper level ridge will persist across the Plains through the weekend. 100 degree temperatures are forecast across the southern half of the state through the middle of the week. After that, above normal in the upper 80s to upper 90s are forecast to persist into the weekend across the state. There is a trended of slightly cooler weather to kick off next week. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z WEDNESDAY/... Issued at 134 AM CDT Tue Jul 14 2026 VFR conditions are expected through the forecast period. Scattered thunderstorms could develop along the international border Tuesday night, but are likely to stay north of KXWA and KMOT. Winds will become easterly at most terminals on Tuesday and increase to around 10-20 kts through the afternoon, strongest in northwest North Dakota where gusts could reach 30 kts. Low level wind shear will impact KBIS and surrounding areas until around sunrise Tuesday morning. && .BIS WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Mission Ridge Winter Park

Where does the snow data for Mission Ridge Winter Park come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Mission Ridge Winter Park?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Mission Ridge Winter Park?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
