730 FXUS61 KPBZ 070500 AFDPBZ Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA 100 AM EDT Sun Jun 7 2026 .WHAT HAS CHANGED... No major changes were made to the latest forecast. && .KEY MESSAGES... 1) Showers/thunderstorms ending early this morning 2) Dry and warm to start, then daily shower/storm chances for the upcoming week && .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGE 1... Showers and a few thunderstorms will continue track SE across the region through early morning ahead of an approaching surface boundary/cold front. Most of the activity will be south of I-70 along a band of increased precipitable water, though some isolated additions showers/storms are possible further north along the boundary. This activity should exit the area by early morning. Stratus is then expected to develop with low level moisture in place. There could also be some light fog, though it appears the stratus should help to keep dense fog from developing for most of the area. KEY MESSAGE 2... There could be an isolated shower or storm south of I-68 today as the front exits, otherwise high pressure will build in from the north with dry weather expected. Ridging/rising 500 mb heights are then progged to build across the Upper Ohio Valley region through Monday, with dry weather and warmer temperatures. The ridge should begin to break down Tuesday, with shower and thunderstorm chances gradually returning from W-E as a shortwave trough approaches. A series of shortwave troughs are then expected to cross the Upper Ohio Valley region through late week, with the strongest progged for a Wednesday passage. This will keep periodic shower and thunderstorm chances in the forecast. Heat and humidity are also expected to return early to mid week, and continue through late week. && .AVIATION /04Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Showers and a few thunderstorms continue to track southeastward across the area south of I-70. These should continue to exit the region overnight. Additional showers along a weak cold front could affect DUJ briefly, though it appears most of this activity should stay east. Otherwise, after some partial clearing, expect widespread IFR stratus to develop overnight, with some fog as well. Conditions should gradually improve through MVFR to VFR by Sunday afternoon with mixing and dry advection behind the boundary. Outlook... VFR is expected Monday under high pressure. Daily thunderstorm and restriction chances return Tuesday through Thursday with a series of crossing shortwave troughs. && .PBZ WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... PA...None. OH...None. Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Cockaigne Ski Resort

Where does the snow data for Cockaigne Ski Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Cockaigne Ski Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Cockaigne Ski Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
