Summary

It's free, but a backcountry permit is required, obtainable from Yellowstone National Park. There are no amenities: no toilets, water, fire rings, picnic tables, or RV access. Campers must practice Leave No Trace. The area is scenic and remote, with meadows, forests, and views of the Firehole River—ideal for backcountry solitude. Expect wildlife sightings and peaceful surroundings. Nearby trails include the Mary Mountain Trail. Best visited from late June through early September when snow has melted and the weather is mild. No reservations accepted—permits are first-come, first-served.
