ESFAFC Recent abnormally cold temperatures have caused many rivers and streams across the Mat-Su, Anchorage, and Kenai areas to rapidly freeze up. This has caused ice dams to form on some waterways leading to rising water levels with some localized overflow flooding occurring in vicinity of ice dams. Currently, overflow from Chester Creek has inundated the Chester Creek trail tunnel under Arctic Blvd. Anchor ice build up and ice dams on Peters Creek, Ship Creek, Campbell Creek, Little Susitna River, and Willow Creek are leading to near bankfull conditions. Water levels will continue to fluctuate until the cold temperatures conclude or when ice cover is more complete upstream. Additionally, above freezing temperatures aloft forecast through Saturday are aiding in snowmelt at higher elevations, increasing water levels downstream.
