Savannah River D Area Ash Basin, also known as 488-1d, is a federal-owned structure located in Barnwell, South Carolina. It was completed in 1977 and serves a primary purpose of "Other." The dam, made of earth with a rock foundation, stands at a height of 15 feet and has a hydraulic height of 17 feet, with a structural height of 20 feet. The basin has a normal storage capacity of 36 acre-feet and a maximum storage of 126 acre-feet.
Despite its low hazard potential, the D.O.E. Savannah River D Area Ash Basin has not been inspected since January 2004. The structure is not state-regulated and has no state jurisdiction, permitting, or enforcement. The Department of Energy is responsible for funding, designing, constructing, regulating, inspecting, and operating the basin. This structure plays a crucial role in managing water resources in the area, particularly in the Savannah River basin, and is an important asset for the region's climate resilience efforts.
