London Locks and Dam, located on the Kanawha River in West Virginia, is a federal structure owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Completed in 1934, this concrete dam serves primarily for navigation purposes, with hydroelectric functions as well. The dam features two multi-arch locks, with a length of 360 feet and a width of 56 feet, facilitating water traffic along the river.
With a significant hazard potential, the dam has a max discharge of 12,700 cubic feet per second and a spillway width of 500 feet. While the dam has a very high risk assessment rating, the US Army Corps of Engineers actively manages flood risks by continuously monitoring the dam's condition, engaging with local emergency managers, and updating emergency action plans. Additionally, regular maintenance and repairs are conducted to ensure the dam's structural integrity and functionality. As severe weather events can impact water levels and potentially lead to dam releases, ongoing risk management measures are in place to safeguard the surrounding communities and environment.
