Cloud Peak is a privately owned earth dam located in Story, Wyoming, along the South Fork South Piney Creek. Completed in 1958 by designer C E Endicott, this irrigation dam stands at a height of 36 feet and has a storage capacity of 4,620 acre-feet. With a surface area of 174 acres and a drainage area of 8 square miles, Cloud Peak plays a crucial role in managing water resources in the region.
Despite being regulated and inspected by the State of Wyoming, Cloud Peak has a high hazard potential due to its location and condition assessment of "Fair." The dam features an uncontrolled spillway with a width of 43 feet and a slide gate outlet. The last inspection in 2017 revealed the need for regular maintenance and risk assessment to ensure the dam's safety and effectiveness in mitigating flooding and providing irrigation water to the surrounding area.
With Liz Cheney as the Congressional Representative for the area, Cloud Peak serves as a vital infrastructure for water management and agricultural purposes in Johnson County, Wyoming. As climate change impacts water resources, monitoring and maintaining dams like Cloud Peak become essential to adapt to changing conditions and ensure the safety and sustainability of water supplies for the community.
