454 FXAK68 PAFC 140000 AFDAFC Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Anchorage AK 400 PM AKDT Mon Jul 13 2026 .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today through Wednesday)... A relative reprieve in the rainfall over Anchorage today as showers have become more scattered with the front having begun to exit the area. This break in rain will likely come to an end by early Tuesday morning, with the next system on it`s approach. This next system is a warmer wave moving out of the North Pacific, with a greater amount of associated moisture content. Moisture content of this Tuesday push of rain is looking to begin a prolonged period of light-to-moderate rainfall over Southcentral. Rain is forecast to steadily spread across the Kenai Peninsula after midnight tonight, and expand into the rest of Southcentral from west to east through tomorrow night. The primary concern with the approach of this new system will be strong and gusty winds through Southcentral gaps. With the low situating over Bristol Bay, a favorable East-West pressure gradient will form over Southcentral, including gaps such as Turnagain Arm. Coastal ridging along the northern coast of Prince William Sound will also enhance the pressure gradient with the low`s arrival. Expect gusty winds to develop as early as this afternoon through the Turnagain Arm and over the Copper River Basin. Winds will be strongest from early Tuesday morning into early Tuesday night. A wind advisory has been issued for Anchorage and the Anchorage Hillside from 4 AM Tuesday to 10 PM Tuesday, for potential winds gusting from 45 to 65 mph. The strongest winds remain forecast across the Hillside and higher elevations. Winds in the lower Anchorage elevations, particularly near downtown, Merrill Field, and Eagle River will not be as strong as along Turnagain Arm. Winds are expected to diminish Tuesday night across Anchorage, but gusty winds will remain through the Copper River Valley through Wednesday. A second temporary break from precipitation and winds is forecast on Wednesday before yet another low pressure system moves into the region early on Thursday. -CL && .SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA/BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today through Thursday)... A longwave trough has set up over the Bering Sea and into Western Alaska. Embedded within this longwave trough is multiple strong shortwaves which will move across the Bering and the Mainland and bring widespread rainfall. This pattern will linger on through the week with periods of widespread rainfall expected. This afternoon, radar imagery across Southwest Alaska shows a brief respite in rainfall as one shortwave departs the area to the north as the next lifts northeast across the southern Bering this evening. As the surface low, now located just north of Nikolski, continues to track east, gusty southwesterly Small-Craft Advisory level winds are expected for Unalaska and the Alaska Peninsula and coastal waters south of these areas through Tuesday. Light to moderate rainfall stretching from the central Aleutians through the Alaska Peninsula will push east this evening and move inland into Southwest Alaska through Tuesday. Widespread rain over Southwest Alaska will begin to slowly taper off from southwest to northeast through Tuesday night, with rain lingering across the Lower Kuskokwim Valley through Wednesday morning. The pattern continues as the next weak low enters the western Bering and takes an eastward track along the Aleutian Chain and Alaska Peninsula, bringing another round of rain and breezy winds Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening. By Wednesday night, rainfall is once again expected to overspread the Southwest mainland, with the heaviest rainfall expected for Bristol Bay and along the western Alaska Range as this low takes a more southerly track. High temperatures for the week remain below 60F due to the widespread cloud cover and rainfall, with low temperatures dipping into the low 40s for many locations by midweek. Wind speeds over the Southwest Mainland will generally be southerly and westerly at 10 to 15 mph through the week as the shortwaves move through. -JH && .LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)... No change from previous Long Term discussion... Longwave trough remains in place over the Mainland through the end of this week. Multiple waves of moisture moving through Southwest and Southcentral Alaska will provide periods of light to moderate rainfall during this time. Utilizing an ensemble mean forecast model approach mitigates the outlier differences while keeping this long range forecast trend. Southcentral: Waves of moisture move through the Gulf bringing periods of locally moderate rainfall to Prince William Sound, Kodiak Island and Eastern Kenai Peninsula through Saturday. Persistent southerly to southwesterly flow will provide the conditions for stronger waves of moisture to track inland to the Copper River Basin, Anchorage Bowl and Mat-Su Valleys. This flow will also result in seasonally cooler pattern from increased cloud cover and cooler temperatures. Southwest: With the trough firmly in place, multiple low pressure systems will move through the Bering Sea. Periods of light to moderate rain are expected from the Aleutians to the Alaska Peninsula through Friday. These conditions reach the Mainland by Saturday keeping the pattern of seasonally cool temperatures and cloud cover through this upcoming weekend. -Johnston/DD && .AVIATION... PANC...Isolated rain showers will persist into the late afternoon over the terminal before a more robust round of rain moves in this evening. MVFR conditions overnight through Wednesday can be expected during this second round of steady rain. Turnagain Arm winds will continue to bend into the terminal this afternoon through late afternoon Tuesday with gusts reaching as high as 30 kts. -Johnston && $$

Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Beach Lake Nordic Ski Trails

Where does the snow data for Beach Lake Nordic Ski Trails come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Beach Lake Nordic Ski Trails?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Beach Lake Nordic Ski Trails?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
