# Arctic Alaska Braces for Significant Snowfall as Continental U.S. Sees Modest Activity

Snow enthusiasts looking for the most dynamic winter weather should turn their attention northward to Alaska's Brooks Range, where a potent system is poised to deliver the nation's most impressive snowfall over the next 48 hours. While the Lower 48 recorded minimal accumulations in the past day—with just 2 inches falling at Sawmill Ridge in Washington's Cascades and an equal amount near Vallecito in Colorado's San Juan Mountains—Alaska's remote northern corridor is preparing for substantially heavier conditions. Imnaviat Creek leads the forecast with 6 inches expected, while Atigun Pass anticipates 4 inches, both locations contending with challenging visibility from freezing fog and mixed precipitation that will create treacherous but powder-rich conditions.

The contrast between yesterday's observations and tomorrow's forecast couldn't be starker. Washington's Sawmill Ridge, sitting at a robust 170-inch base depth despite the modest 2-inch addition, faces a transition to hazier conditions with potential thunderstorms—an unusual weather pattern that may temporarily halt accumulation in the Cascades. Meanwhile, Colorado's Vallecito station, operating with just a 3-inch base, received its 2 inches amid shower activity that's expected to shift toward thunderstorms, suggesting the state's high country remains in an unsettled spring-like pattern rather than experiencing classic powder conditions. These totals pale in comparison to what's developing along Alaska's Dalton Highway corridor.

For researchers and backcountry enthusiasts, the Brooks Range action represents the nation's most significant snow event in the current cycle. Imnavait Creek, positioned at 68.6°N latitude, exemplifies the late-season Arctic systems that can still produce meaningful accumulation even with minimal existing base depths. Atigun Pass, a critical mountain crossing at 4,739 feet elevation, will see travelers navigating both fresh snowfall and areas of freezing fog—a combination that creates whiteout potential. Even Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean coast expects 2 inches with mixed rain and snow, remarkable for such a northerly coastal location. While major ski resorts in the Rockies and Cascades aren't seeing significant action, Alaska's remote terrain is experiencing the kind of blustery, accumulating conditions that define true winter weather, making it the clear focal point for snow tracking over the next two days.

Ski report FAQ

About Alaska ski conditions

Where do the Alaska ski conditions come from?

Fresh-snow totals are aggregated from resort-side reporting, NOAA's NOHRSC snow analysis grid, and nearby SNOTEL stations. Snowpack and SWE typically come from the closest SNOTEL station to each resort.

What's a meteogram?

A compact 15-day weather chart showing temperature, precipitation, wind, and weather-symbol forecast in one view. It's the same data professional forecasters use, rendered for quick at-a-glance trip planning.

What about backcountry conditions in Alaska?

Always consult your regional avalanche center — resort conditions don't translate to backcountry safety. The U.S. avalanche center directory is at avalanche.org.

Can I get an alert when fresh snow falls at a Alaska resort?

Yes. Save any ski area as a favorite in the Snoflo iOS app, set a fresh-snow threshold, and you'll get a push the moment it crosses. Free with a Snoflo account.
