536 FXUS63 KILX 240743 AFDILX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lincoln IL 243 AM CDT Mon Aug 24 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Seasonal and mostly dry weather is expected through Tuesday. - The next chance for showers and storms arrives Wednesday. Some of these storms could be strong to marginally severe. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 243 AM CDT Mon Aug 24 2026 Upper analysis has the middle Mississippi Valley positioned under northwest flow with strong upper ridging over the southwest US and a closed low impacting the northeast US. Surface high pressure over central IL early this morning has kept skies mostly clear and winds light. Temperatures as of 2 am have dropped into the upper 50s to low 60s with dewpoint depressions ranging from 0 to a couple degrees. Because of this, patchy low lying fog will be possible through about sunrise. Otherwise, seasonal and mostly dry weather is expected through Tuesday with high temperatures today and tomorrow expected to be in the upper 70s to middle 80s. By Wednesday, a mid-level shortwave will track through the southern Canadian provinces and into the northern Great Lakes Region, sending a cold front through Illinois. This will bring our next chance for showers and storms. Out ahead of the front, temperatures will climb well into the 80s with steady moisture return bringing dewpoints back into the upper 60s to low 70s. Moderately strong instability is expected to develop by Wednesday afternoon with seasonally strong shear around 30 kts nearest to the front. Forecast soundings depict inverted-V T/Td profiles, implying evaporative cooling could rapidly send parcels toward the surface and locally increase winds. A capping inversion will be in place most of the day, but will erode by late afternoon/early evening as the front approaches and lapse rates steepen. Although the better forcing will be displaced to our north, a few strong to marginally severe storms could develop late Wednesday afternoon and evening, posing a threat for damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail. Northwest flow remains largely in place through late this week, transitioning to zonal by the weekend. A few weak shortwaves rippling through the upper flow may spark occasional spotty showers through the end of the week, though most will stay dry. Longer range guidance shows a more defined wave/front moving through the Midwest states sometime between Saturday night and Sunday, which could bring another chance for showers and storms. Temperatures will remain seasonable through the end of the week, then turn warmer later this weekend into early next week with the NBM showing upper 80s to near 90 degree highs. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z TUESDAY/... Issued at 1202 AM CDT Mon Aug 24 2026 High pressure will be in place over central Illinois most of the period resulting in light and variable winds. Fog is the primary concern overnight into Monday morning and may be possible again after the current TAF period Monday night into Tuesday morning. Outside of fog, VFR conditions will prevail the remainder of the period with some high based diurnal cumulus developing Monday afternoon and increasing mid level clouds late in the period. && .ILX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Christmas Mountain Village

Where does the snow data for Christmas Mountain Village come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Christmas Mountain Village?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Christmas Mountain Village?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
