569 FXUS61 KBUF 030546 AFDBUF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Buffalo NY 146 AM EDT Wed Jun 3 2026 .WHAT HAS CHANGED... No significant changes with this forecast package. && .KEY MESSAGES... 1) Unsettled weather is expected to return this weekend. && .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGE 1...Unsettled weather is expected to return this weekend. A well established ridge axis of an omega pattern will begin to fade through the end of the week, with a PACNW trough cresting this ridge axis and bearing down upon our region this weekend. Day to day warming through the week, combined with a southerly moist flow late in the week, will lend to building instability by the weekend. This, combined with lift ahead of the shortwave trough and well established lake breeze circulations will increase confidence for showers and thunderstorms, especially during the peak heating of the day for the weekend. Forecasted PWATS are expected to reach 1.5 inches or so, which would allow for downpours of rain within any stronger thunderstorms. Latest ensemble datasets have converged on Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning for the bulk of the precipitation activity, with lingering showers and perhaps a thunderstorm Sunday afternoon before drier air builds in from the Northwest through the day and evening Sunday...this behind the exiting shortwave trough. && .AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... For the 06Z TAFS a broad area of surface high pressure centered just to the west of Lake Erie will slowly drift southeastward today and tonight, while bringing a continuation of VFR flight conditions. Local lake breeze circulations will become established off both Lakes, with southwest flow for KBUF and KART while KROC and KJHW will have more northwest flow. Initial northwest flow for KIAG will likely become SW through the afternoon as the Lake Erie lake breeze circulation expands. Outlook... Thursday and Friday...VFR. Friday night...Mainly VFR. Chance of showers (MVFR). Saturday and Sunday...Mainly MVFR/VFR, with IFR in showers and thunderstorms. Heavy downpours are possible. && .MARINE... High pressure near the western end of Lake Erie this Wednesday morning will drift south and eastward through the Ohio Valley today before drifting to the Southeast late in the week. This will maintain light winds and gentle waves. A cold front will drop southward across the eastern Great Lakes this weekend with an increase in both wind and wave action...possibly to small craft advisory thresholds. && .BUF WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Mount Pakenham

Where does the snow data for Mount Pakenham come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Mount Pakenham?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Mount Pakenham?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
