About this resort

Buena Vista Ski Area

Buena Vista Ski Area is a small ski resort in Bemidji, Minnesota, with a focus on family-friendly skiing. The best trails at the resort include the beginner-friendly Bunny Hill and the challenging Gold Rush. An interesting fact about the resort is that it was founded in 1964 by a group of local skiers who wanted a place to ski in the Bemidji area. For beginner skiers, the resort offers a Ski and Snowboard School with experienced instructors. The best apres ski bar in the area is The Tavern on South Shore Drive, which offers a cozy atmosphere and great food and drinks.

Terrain mix: The Buena Vista Ski Area in Minnesota is located in the Buena Vista Mountain Range. The resort offers a variety of slopes with various aspects, including north-facing, south-facing, east-facing, and west-facing slopes. These different aspects can affect the amount and quality of snow on the slopes, as well as the direction of the sunlight and wind exposure.

443 FXUS63 KFGF 190451 AFDFGF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Grand Forks ND 1151 PM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Isolated thunderstorms in parts of southeastern North Dakota starting Wednesday evening, spreading into Minnesota on Thursday. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 209 PM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026 ...Synopsis... A classic August pattern is in place over the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. As of this afternoon, we are sandwiched between ridging over the western US, and troughing over the Great Lakes. This leaves us in northwesterly flow aloft through the next several days. This upper level flow will propagate a few shortwaves through the region. The first shortwave late Wednesday brings the potential for showers and a few thunderstorms. A few showers and thunderstorms may linger into Thursday. Another wave arrives during the second half of the weekend. Neither of these systems look to bring heavy, widespread rainfall, but rather more localized shower/thunderstorm type activity. Therefore, the probability for widespread precipitation over the next seven days remains low. Temperatures will remain seasonal most days (highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s). As western US ridging tries to translate eastward early next week, temperatures do look to warm a few degrees, into the mid 80s or so. ...Showers and Storms Wednesday into Thursday... As a shortwave tracks southeastward out of Canada on Wednesday, showers and a few thunderstorms will develop Wednesday west of this FA, tracking into southeastern ND during the evening. Instability is meager (up to about 500 J/Kg of MUCAPE), which looks to be the major limiting factor for severe storms. The latest SPC day 2 convective outlook has removed this FA from the level 1 out 5 marginal risk, which conceptually makes sense based the poor instability parameter space. Showers and storms will translate eastward Wednesday night. A few more storms may develop Thursday afternoon in MN, but again instability looks to be lacking. Lightning will be the primary threat with any storm that develops. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z THURSDAY/... Issued at 1152 PM CDT Tue Aug 18 2026 VFR conditions prevail through the period at all TAF sites. Light and variable winds prevail overnight into Wednesday, along with mostly clear skies. Impacts to aviation are not expected this TAF period. && .FGF WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... ND...None. MN...None. && $$ DISCUSSION...Rafferty AVIATION...Lynch

Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Buena Vista Ski Area

Where does the snow data for Buena Vista Ski Area come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Buena Vista Ski Area?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Buena Vista Ski Area?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
