Crystal Mountain -- Michigan ski resort
Crystal Mountain Michigan · Beulah
About this resort

Crystal Mountain

Crystal Mountain ski resort in Michigan offers 58 runs, ranging from beginner to expert level, spread over 102 acres. The best trails for advanced skiers are Buck and Thistle, while novice skiers can enjoy the easier North Face and Sidewinder. Many people are unaware that Crystal Mountain was originally a golf course, converted into a ski resort in 1956. For beginners, we recommend taking the Crystal Cruiser, a scenic lift that offers an easy ride for first-timers. The best apres ski bar is the Vista Lounge, which provides a cozy atmosphere, delicious cocktails, and a beautiful view of the slopes.

Terrain mix: The Crystal Mountain Ski Resort in Michigan is located in the northern part of the state, near the town of Thompsonville. The resort is situated in the rolling hills of Benzie County, with several nearby mountain ranges including:

1. The Manistee National Forest, which features the nearby Manistee Mountains and offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities such as hiking, biking, and fishing.

2. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which features towering sand dunes along the Lake Michigan shoreline and provides stunning views of the surrounding area.

In terms of the ski resort itself, Crystal Mountain offers a variety of runs and slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. The resort features a vertical drop of 375 feet and a total of 58 runs spread across 102 skiable acres. Additionally, Crystal Mountain offers a terrain park for freestyle skiers and snowboarders, as well as several lifts to access the different areas of the mountain.

447 FXUS63 KAPX 140542 AFDAPX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 142 AM EDT Fri Aug 14 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Rain chances return late Saturday and Sunday. - Dry weather expected to start next week. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 139 AM EDT Fri Aug 14 2026 Pattern Synopsis: Troughing will remain draped across the far NE CONUS and north Atlantic into this weekend as ridging folds over the northern Great Plains and Midwest, keeping the Great Lakes in northwest mid/upper- level flow between features over the next few days. Subsidence provided at this inflection point will continue to build surface high pressure from Ontario down into the Great Lakes today and Saturday. Aforementioned ridging eventually slides east of the region later this weekend as low-amplitude troughing slides overhead, supporting a cyclone that will trek across the Great Lakes late Saturday through Sunday. High pressure may temporarily build back in early next week before a more active pattern settles in late in the forecast period. Forecast Details: With mostly sunny/clear skies in store for the Northwoods today into Saturday with high pressure in place, the primary focus turns to late Saturday and Sunday when rain chances return to the region. Guidance indicates potential for split forcing from embedded shortwaves in the main flow -- one further south across the state border/lower Great Lakes, and a second further north across Lake Superior/Ontario. Should this be the case, northern Michigan may find itself in a relative lull in rain coverage this weekend. Earliest chances look to arrive Saturday evening with best rain chances coming during the day on Sunday. Given this potential for split forcing, it is possible that some areas of northern Michigan end up seeing little/no rain into early next week. That said, the most likely area to see steady rain during the second half of this weekend -- and low chances for localized heavy rainfall -- will be the M-55 corridor and south. A few rumbles of thunder cannot be ruled out Saturday night and Sunday. Looking ahead, dry weather looks to kick off next week before rain chances move back in closer to the middle of the week. High temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s early next week will be close to seasonal averages before cooler daytime temperatures are expected Wednesday. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SATURDAY/... Issued at 1148 PM EDT Thu Aug 13 2026 Predominantly VFR aviation weather conditions expected across the northern Michigan terminals through the 06Z TAF valid time. Patchy fog is expected overnight, which may locally reduce visibility to MVFR or IFR levels for a time. Winds will generally be light through the period. && .APX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

Track Crystal Mountain in the Snoflo app

Save this resort as a favorite, set push alerts when snowfall crosses a threshold (e.g. "alert me when Crystal Mountain reports 6″ new"), and Snoflo's iOS app will push the moment the SNOTEL station crosses.

FAQ

About Crystal Mountain

Where does the snow data for Crystal Mountain come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Crystal Mountain?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Crystal Mountain?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
