A backcountry permit is required (no reservations; first-come, first-served), with no fees beyond the standard park entrance. There are no toilets, water, fire rings, picnic tables, or RV access—this is primitive camping. The area features lush meadows, forested hills, and is prized for solitude, fly-fishing, and wildlife viewing. Accessed via trails like the Bighorn Pass Trail, it’s ideal for experienced backpackers. Summer and early fall offer the best weather and trail conditions in this remote, scenic high country zone.
