Built in 1959 for irrigation purposes, this earth dam stands at 37 feet high and spans 410 feet in length, with a maximum storage capacity of 12,900 acre-feet. The reservoir covers a surface area of 503 acres and is fed by Shoshone Creek, with a drainage area of 10.7 square miles.
With a high hazard potential and fair condition assessment, Shoshone Lake is closely monitored, with inspections conducted every five years. The reservoir's spillway type is uncontrolled with a width of 30 feet, and it is equipped with a single slide (sluice gate) outlet gate. Despite the moderate risk assessment rating, the dam continues to be a crucial water resource for irrigation in the region, serving the surrounding agricultural community.
Managed by private owners and regulated by the State of Wyoming, Shoshone Lake plays a vital role in water management and conservation efforts in the area. As a site of interest for water resource and climate enthusiasts, its strategic location and hydraulic features make it an important asset to the local ecosystem and economy.
