421 FXUS63 KAPX 140617 AFDAPX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gaylord MI 217 AM EDT Tue Jul 14 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - Hot and humid again today. - Less hot Wednesday onward with periodic shower/storm chances returning Friday into at least the start of the weekend. - Smoke from Ontario wildfires likely to result in hazy skies across parts of northern Michigan today, and especially Wednesday. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 214 AM EDT Tue Jul 14 2026 Pattern Synopsis/Forecast: Impressive heat dome remains in control today across the nation`s midsection with another day of hot and humid weather on tap locally. However, digging mid-level waves in northern Ontario/Quebec will gradually suppress this heat dome southward, allowing heat/humidity to improve Wednesday onward. While no glaring precip concerns are seen through at least midweek, there`s gradually increasing confidence in a return of scattered shower/storm chances late in the work week into the start of the weekend. Forecast Details: Primary focus in the near-term solely revolved around another day of hot/humid weather across northern Michigan. Inherited heat advisories in good shape with widespread high temperatures spanning the 90s. Highest probabilities for a handful of locations to reach the triple digits are focused across downsloping northeast lower, especially near Saginaw Bay. Highest heat indices follow that footprint as well -- ranging from the mid 90s to low 100s (highest east of I-75). Occasional breeziness up to 20-25 mph may provide some temporary relief at times, but still a hot day no matter how you slice it. As was alluded to above, heat dome begins to get pushed farther south starting tonight, and more so Wednesday through the remainder of the week. Relief from the heat as a result, but lots of uncertainties around just warm we`re able to get Wednesday due to increasing potential for wildfire smoke from Ontario to filter in across much of the state. Latest suite of smoke- allowing guidance depicts at least low concentrations of upper- level smoke filtering in across the eastern U.P. and tip of the mitt later today, with concentrations (both aloft and near- surface) really ramping up later tonight through Wednesday. Longer range hi-res visibility progs picking up on this as well, with fairly high probabilities for reduced visibility at times on Wednesday due to smoke. Assuming this comes to fruition, Wednesday`s forecast high temperatures in real jeopardy of being several degrees too high. Already bumped temps down a handful of degrees area-wide, but that may not be enough. Air quality issues likely to become a concern as well. Potential for hazy skies/smoke to continue on Thursday. By late in the week into the start of the weekend, at least some potential exists for more active weather to return as more active mid-upper levels eventually prevail. Chances for showers/storms return as early as Friday and continue at times through the weekend (highest Friday night - Saturday). && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z WEDNESDAY/... Issued at 1210 AM EDT Tue Jul 14 2026 VFR conditions are largely expected across northern Michigan through the issuance period. Patchy FG/BR may develop across some areas late tonight/early morning (including MBL), but confidence is low at this time. West to west-northwest winds will increase some through the morning with sustained speeds increasing to 5-10 kts during the day with gusts to 20 kts possible into Tue. evening. Low-level wind shear is also included in the TAFs tonight as winds quickly increase off the surface to 30+ kts. && .APX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Caberfae Peaks Ski & Golf Resort

Where does the snow data for Caberfae Peaks Ski & Golf Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Caberfae Peaks Ski & Golf Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Caberfae Peaks Ski & Golf Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
