115 FXUS61 KBUF 040605 AFDBUF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Buffalo NY 205 AM EDT Tue Aug 4 2026 .WHAT HAS CHANGED... Only minor changes with this update. && .KEY MESSAGES... 1) Unsettled weather pattern returns Wednesday continuing into the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... Key Message 1...Unsettled weather pattern returns Wednesday continuing into the weekend. A large scale troughing pattern will move into central Canada centered over the western Hudson Bay by midweek with multiple shortwaves passing in the flow across the northern CONUS. This will result in an unsettled weather pattern developing Wednesday with multiple chances for showers and thunderstorms continuing into the weekend. As the early week high pressure center moves off the Atlantic coast Wednesday, southerly flow will begin to return moisture to the area ahead of a cold front that may stall across the Great Lakes region late in the week. At this time, flow appears to be on the weaker side limiting more robust organized convection, but PWAT values return towards 1.5-1.7" that could be supportive of more chances for heavy rainfall. && .AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Dry weather is expected through the TAF period as a surface ridge affects our region and the embedded high pressure center moves E`ward from the western and central Great Lakes toward eastern NY. Clear skies, light surface winds, and lingering low-level moisture from recent rainfall will contribute to areas of river valley fog and radiation fog through about 13Z/Tues, followed by the onset of diurnal convective mixing of the boundary layer. Lake Erie and Lake Ontario lake breezes are expected between ~14Z/Tues and ~00Z/Wed, and will impact locations within several miles of both lakes, including KBUF, KIAG, and KART. Outlook... Tuesday Night...Dry weather and mainly VFR expected. However, river valley and lake valley steam fog and associated MVFR or worse conditions are possible. Wednesday through Saturday...Periodic showers and thunderstorms with MVFR or worse conditions are expected, especially each afternoon through early evening. && .MARINE... High pressure will build into the lower Great Lakes Tuesday before unsettled weather returns later in the week. No marine headlines are expected through the rest of the week. && .BUF WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... NY...None. MARINE...None. && $$ DISCUSSION...TMA AVIATION...TMA MARINE...TMA

Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Holiday Valley Resort

Where does the snow data for Holiday Valley Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Holiday Valley Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Holiday Valley Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
