809 FXUS63 KMPX 230651 AFDMPX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 151 AM CDT Sun Aug 23 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... - SLight chance of thunderstorms across southwest Minnesota Monday morning - Scattered showers & thunderstorms likely Tuesday, a few strong storms possible during the afternoon/evening. && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 143 AM CDT Sun Aug 23 2026 A cool late-sumer night is developing under clear high pressure, with highs falling into the upper 40s & low 50s across the area. Patchy fog is possible in spots through sunrise, mainly along the Minnesota River Valley & western Wisconsin. Similar temperatures to saturday this afternoon with highs again in the upper 70s, although winds will be much lighter with the high pressure overhead. The surface high begins shifting east Monday, with southerly flow returning ahead of the next weak cold front. This front looks to move through sometime late Monday into Tuesday, bringing our next chance for scattered showers & thunderstorms. Moisture return ahead of the front looks fairly limited though, and considerable spread remains within the ensemble guidance regarding precipitation coverage, so rain chances remain fairly low at this point. The first round of thunderstorms looks possible late Sunday night into Monday morning, but guidance generally keep the shortwave & bulk of the precipitation off to the west over the Dakotas. Another cold front moves through the region on Tuesday, but the general model timing brings the front through during the morning hours, which would mean that any widespread convection & appreciable rainfall could be limited. There are a few high-resolution models that are slower with the front, bringing it through during the late afternoon & evening. Should this slower timing occur, we could see a few strong or severe thunderstorms along the front with CAPE values reaching 1000-1500 J/kg during the afternoon along with 30-40 kts of deep shear. Showers & thunderstorms during the morning could always lead to reduced instability & a lower chance of afternoon storms as well. Otherwise, temperatures look to remain steady through next week with highs generally around 80 & lows in the 50s to low 60s. Ensemble guidance suggests we could get into a more active pattern over the weekend as a train of shortwaves passes over the Upper Midwest. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z MONDAY/... Issued at 1205 AM CDT Sun Aug 23 2026 Mostly clear skies overnight with some diurnal cumulus developing tomorrow morning. Patchy fog & mist is possible along the Minnesota River Valley, but the chances look low enough to keep out of the TAF for now at RWF & MKT. Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Powder Ridge Ski Area

Where does the snow data for Powder Ridge Ski Area come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Powder Ridge Ski Area?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Powder Ridge Ski Area?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
