Merlo, also known as Merlo Lake, is a privately owned dam located in Healdsburg, California. Built in 1982, this earth dam stands at a height of 74 feet and serves multiple purposes including flood risk reduction, irrigation, and water supply. With a storage capacity of 930 acre-feet and a drainage area of 1.15 square miles, Merlo plays a crucial role in managing water resources in the region.
Managed by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) under the Safety of Dams program, Merlo has a high hazard potential but is currently deemed to be in satisfactory condition. The dam is regularly inspected, with the last assessment conducted in February 2020, ensuring its structural integrity and safety. In the event of an emergency, designated emergency action plans (EAP) are in place to protect downstream communities and infrastructure.
Situated on Fall Creek, a tributary of the Russian River, Merlo not only helps in flood control but also contributes to the overall water supply and irrigation needs of the area. With its strategic location and vital role in water management, Merlo serves as a critical infrastructure for ensuring the resiliency of the region against the impacts of climate change and changing water patterns.
