West Stewart is a privately owned irrigation dam located in Rio Blanco, Colorado, near the city of Rangely. Built in 1895, this earth dam stands at a height of 22 feet and has a storage capacity of 65 acre-feet. With a primary purpose of irrigation, it also serves fire protection, stock, and small fish pond needs. The dam spans 300 feet in length and is situated on the West Fork Stewart Gulch, with a drainage area of 10 square miles.

Despite its age, West Stewart dam is in fair condition according to a recent inspection in August 2020, with a low hazard potential and moderate risk assessment rating of 3. The spillway is uncontrolled with a width of 12 feet, allowing for a maximum discharge of 288 cubic feet per second. The dam's emergency action plan status and risk management measures are currently not available, but it is regulated, permitted, inspected, and enforced by the Colorado Division of Water Resources. For water resource and climate enthusiasts, West Stewart offers a glimpse into Colorado's historical irrigation infrastructure and the ongoing efforts to ensure its safety and sustainability.
