Built in 1963 by the US Army Corps of Engineers, the dam stands at a height of 137 feet and has a length of 4328 feet, with a storage capacity of 1,559,270 acre feet. Its primary purpose is flood risk reduction, with a controlled spillway width of 280 feet and a maximum discharge of 236,600 cubic feet per second.
The dam has a high hazard potential and a very high risk assessment rating, indicating the need for rigorous risk management measures. The USACE continuously monitors the dam's condition and engages with local emergency managers and the public to raise awareness and readiness for potential emergencies. Regular maintenance and repairs are conducted to ensure the dam's structural integrity and functionality. Despite these efforts, the dam's limited water storage capacity and the potential for severe weather events pose ongoing challenges that require constant vigilance and proactive management.
In the event of dam-related emergencies, an emergency action plan is in place, and regular updates are made to ensure preparedness and effective response. The USACE works closely with local authorities to support the development of evacuation plans and to communicate important information about the dam. As the USACE works to address all types of flood risk associated with the dam, ongoing improvements and updates will continue to enhance the dam's resilience and effectiveness in managing water levels and mitigating potential hazards.
