About this resort

Massanutten Resort

Massanutten Resort, located in Virginia, offers a variety of slopes for skiers of all levels. The best trails for advanced skiers are Paradice and Diamond Jim, while beginners can enjoy the gentle slopes of the Easy Street and Upper Showtime trails. An interesting fact about Massanutten is that it was originally a family farm that was converted into a ski resort in the 1970s. For beginners, we recommend taking a lesson at the Snow Sports School, which offers classes and private instruction. After a long day of skiing, head to Base Camp for some après ski drinks and snacks.

Terrain mix: The Massanutten Resort ski resort is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, specifically in the Massanutten Mountain range. The resort features several ski slopes and trails that offer a variety of skiing and snowboarding opportunities for visitors. The mountain aspects of Massanutten Resort include both beginner and advanced slopes, as well as terrain parks and tubing areas. The resort also offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

821 FXUS61 KRNK 300536 AFDRNK Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 136 AM EDT Sun Aug 30 2026 .WHAT HAS CHANGED... Growing confidence in hot weather beginning Monday and lasting through Thursday. Otherwise, almost no rain until Thursday into the weekend. Aviation updated. && .KEY MESSAGES... 1) High confidence in impactful heat this week. && .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGE 1: High confidence in impactful heat this week. The main storm track remains well north of the area through the work week. A strong mid level ridge will strengthen over the ArkLaTex, and gradually work its way east, becoming centered over the Southern Appalachians by Wednesday into Thursday. Friday into the weekend an Omega Block develops, with robust low pressure over eastern Canada beginning to suppress the ridging over the Appalachians. Temperatures at 850mb will hover around 21-24 degrees C in the afternoons and evenings Monday through Thursday. The heat should peak Wednesday, but remains quite high Thursday as well, especially over the Piedmont. Temperatures in the 80s and 90s combined with dew points in the mid to upper 60s will result in heat indices between 100-106 for parts of the Piedmont as well as the Roanoke urban area during this period. It is possible heat advisories may be needed; please monitor future updates to the forecast. Through Wednesday, and possibly Thursday, rain looks scarce, with a few tiny cells trying to develop in the afternoons and early evenings. We may see a rogue storm develop along the southern Blue Ridge, but some capping and skinny CAPE will contribute to weaker cells. Higher chances for showers and thunderstorms return Friday through Sunday as a cold front nears and slowly pushes south across the area, and as the ridge weakens. && .AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Areas of stratus and developing patchy dense fog this morning will lower most TAF sites to LIFR to MVFR after about 7-9Z and lasting until 12-14Z today. More fog, some of it dense, will develop again during the overnight hours tonight into mid morning tomorrow. Otherwise expect VFR conditions will some passing mid and high clouds at times. Calm to light and variable winds this morning will give way to a WSW direction for the mountains, and a southerly direction for the Piedmont. Speeds will be 3-7 kts and drop off to calm or a very light westerly wind overnight into Monday. EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK... High pressure will build across the Appalachian Mountains on Monday to bring drier weather and mainly VFR conditions through at least Wednesday, outside of morning fog for the mountain terminals. A few showers and storms may develop Thursday afternoon and evening. && .RNK WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... VA...None. NC...None. WV...None. && $$ DISCUSSION...SH AVIATION...SH

Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Massanutten Resort

Where does the snow data for Massanutten Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Massanutten Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Massanutten Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
