Virginia may not be the first state you think of for skiing, but it offers some excellent options for those looking to hit the slopes. Here is a guide to some of the most popular resorts in the state, along with average snowfall per season, average snowpacks, and the best month to visit.

3. Bryce Resort: Located in the Allegheny Mountains, Bryce Resort offers 8 slopes and trails, as well as a tubing park. The resort receives an average of 30 inches of snow per season, with a snowpack of 12 inches on average. The best time to visit is January through February.

Virginia has a rich ski history, with some of the earliest ski resorts in the country located in the state. One notable example is the Homestead Ski Area, which opened in 1959 and was one of the first ski resorts in the Southeast. The resort operated until 2006, when it closed due to financial difficulties. Today, the Homestead still offers skiing on a limited basis, but the focus is now on its famous hot springs and other amenities.

Ski report FAQ

About Virginia ski conditions

Where do the Virginia ski conditions come from?

Fresh-snow totals are aggregated from resort-side reporting, NOAA's NOHRSC snow analysis grid, and nearby SNOTEL stations. Snowpack and SWE typically come from the closest SNOTEL station to each resort.

What's a meteogram?

A compact 15-day weather chart showing temperature, precipitation, wind, and weather-symbol forecast in one view. It's the same data professional forecasters use, rendered for quick at-a-glance trip planning.

What about backcountry conditions in Virginia?

Always consult your regional avalanche center — resort conditions don't translate to backcountry safety. The U.S. avalanche center directory is at avalanche.org.

Can I get an alert when fresh snow falls at a Virginia resort?

Yes. Save any ski area as a favorite in the Snoflo iOS app, set a fresh-snow threshold, and you'll get a push the moment it crosses. Free with a Snoflo account.
