About this resort

Ski Cherokee

Ski Cherokee is a top ski resort in North Carolina's Smoky Mountains, offering 17 ski slopes and trails suitable for all levels. The top trails are the advanced runs; Oconaluftee and Unto These Hills have the steepest pitches and the best views. Few people know that the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians own and operate the resort. For beginners, the gentle Bunny Slope with its Magic Carpet lift is the best option. The resort also offers a tubing hill for non-skiing activities. For the best apres ski bar, head to the cozy Rendezvous Lounge for a hot toddy or craft beer.

Terrain mix: The Cherokee Ski Resort in the United States is located in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina. The resort is situated in the Great Smoky Mountains, which is part of the larger Appalachian Mountain range. The resort offers skiing and snowboarding on a variety of mountain aspects, including north-facing slopes, south-facing slopes, and east and west-facing slopes. The varying aspects provide a diverse range of terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

357 FXUS61 KCTP 250628 AFDCTP Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service State College PA 228 AM EDT Sat Jul 25 2026 .WHAT HAS CHANGED... Lowered dewpoints across east-central PA Saturday afternoon. && .KEY MESSAGES... 1) Pleasant/dry pattern with comfortably low daytime humidity continues into the last weekend of July. 2) Turning more humid and unsettled into early next week with the best odds for storms Monday PM through Tuesday PM. && .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGE 1: Pleasant/dry pattern with comfortably low daytime humidity continues into the last weekend of July. Nice summer evening outside, with just some high clouds and low humidity levels. Last year we went from a very humid July to low dewpoint air for most of August. Not likely to do this again, but at least for the time being the less humid and mainly dry weather should hold. More information below. Cloud cover will increase into tonight, but no rain is expected. Dry weather continues for the majority of CPA through Saturday with just a low chance of an isolated shower/t-storm along the western periphery of the Allegheny Mtns during the afternoon peak heating cycle. We adjusted dewpoints lower for Saturday afternoon over east central PA based on the hires model signal. KEY MESSAGE 2: Turning more humid and unsettled into early next week with the best odds for storms Monday PM through Tuesday PM. Shortwave energy diving southeast around the prominent upper high centered over central and southern Plains will help to eventually carve out a closed upper low over the eastern Great Lakes by early next week. Expect a gradual increase in shower and thunderstorm coverage Sunday through Tuesday with peak POPs in the Monday PM-Tuesday PM window based on the latest ensemble guidance. There will likely be some level of severe and/or excessive rain risks to manage that are largely dependent on timing/upstream system evolution at this point. && .AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... VFR conditions are virtually certain (> 90% probability) through 06Z Sunday at all airfields across central Pennsylvania outside of BFD/JST. Low-level cloud across the Laurels will likely expand overnight; however recent observations outline cloud decks generally between 3,000 to 5,000 ft AGL which will likely be some of the lowest cloud decks in the near-term. Some scattered shower development is expected this morning in close vicinity to JST; however, confidence remains low in any showers impacting the airfield through 18Z Saturday. Chances gradually expand northward and eastward late this afternoon and evening, with increased chances at BFD/JST in the 18Z-06Z timeframe for some showers but given the scattered nature, not confident enough to include mentions and/or restrictions at this time. If showers do form and go over BFD/JST in this timeframe, MVFR ceilings appear to be the most likely solution, generally between 2,000 and 3,000ft AGL for a one-to-two hour period. Outlook... Sun...VFR favored with a few showers/storms possible, mainly over western-central PA. Mon-Wed...Restrictions likely in showers/storms. && .CLIMATE... Cooler than average temperatures across the region led to multiple record low temperatures being broken for July 23rd and July 24th across central Pennsylvania. On July 23rd: * Altoona set a record low temperature of 47 degrees, breaking the previous record of 50 degrees set back in 1981. * Bradford tied a record low temperature of 38 degrees which was previously set in 1981. * Johnstown tied a record low temperature of 49 degrees which was previously set in 1983. On July 24th: * Altoona set a record low temperature of 47 degrees, breaking the previous record of 50 degrees set back in 1957. * Bradford set a record low temperature of 41 degrees, breaking the previous record of 44 degrees set back in 1993. && .CTP WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

Track Ski Cherokee in the Snoflo app

Save this resort as a favorite, set push alerts when snowfall crosses a threshold (e.g. "alert me when Ski Cherokee reports 6″ new"), and Snoflo's iOS app will push the moment the SNOTEL station crosses.

FAQ

About Ski Cherokee

Where does the snow data for Ski Cherokee come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Ski Cherokee?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Ski Cherokee?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
