About this resort

Massanutten Resort

Massanutten Resort, located in Virginia, offers a variety of slopes for skiers of all levels. The best trails for advanced skiers are Paradice and Diamond Jim, while beginners can enjoy the gentle slopes of the Easy Street and Upper Showtime trails. An interesting fact about Massanutten is that it was originally a family farm that was converted into a ski resort in the 1970s. For beginners, we recommend taking a lesson at the Snow Sports School, which offers classes and private instruction. After a long day of skiing, head to Base Camp for some après ski drinks and snacks.

Terrain mix: The Massanutten Resort ski resort is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, specifically in the Massanutten Mountain range. The resort features several ski slopes and trails that offer a variety of skiing and snowboarding opportunities for visitors. The mountain aspects of Massanutten Resort include both beginner and advanced slopes, as well as terrain parks and tubing areas. The resort also offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

785 FXUS61 KRNK 180624 AFDRNK Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 224 AM EDT Fri Sep 18 2026 .WHAT HAS CHANGED... No major changes to the forecast with daily chances of showers/storms into next week. Aviation updated. && .KEY MESSAGES... 1) Scattered afternoon/evening showers/storms. Summertime pattern continues into early next week, then a cool down. && .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGE 1: Scattered afternoon/evening showers/storms. Summertime pattern continues into early next week then a cool down. At the surface, a cold front will move southward into the Mid- Atlantic today. Ahead of the front, a moist airmass will be in place over much of the area . Surface dewpoints within this airmass will be in the 60s to near 70 F. As surface temperatures warm today, an axis of moderate instability will develop along the moist axis. In response to surface heating, scattered thunderstorms will form in the mountains and move southward into the Piedmont and foothills. The thermodynamic environment may be enough to support an isolated wind-damage threat, mainly in the late afternoon and early evening when low- level lapse rates become steepest, especially along/south of the VA/NC border. The front shift south Saturday but close enough to keep shower/storm chances around with higher probabilities over the southern Blue Ridge, and less across the central VA Piedmont. Airmass should be a little more stable so not expecting anything severe. The front works north Sunday as a warm front, then drops again early next week, while upper trough starts to dig southeast into the Ohio Valley. Should see an uptick in rain chances Monday- Tuesday. By mid to late week the fronts should be east and south of us and high pressure arrives from the north. However, the upper trough remains northwest of the area and will keep shower chances around while temperatures cool to below normal. For most, this will be much needed rain, but still overall doesn`t look like a complete washout. Just keep the umbrellas handy at times. && .AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... Moisture from Thursday showers and valley inversions will likely to lead to some patchy fog overnight with period of dense fog possible in the mountain valleys between 09z/2AM and 13z/10AM Friday especially LWB. Fog burns off by mid morning with VFR expected through the day. Front approaching from the north will bring another opportunity for scattered storms Friday and possible sub-VFR cigs/vsby if storms move over terminals. Due to the scattered nature only have VCTS in all terminals. After 00z/Sat should see convection wane though potential sub- VFR cigs may occur with frontal boundary close. EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK... Mainly diurnal shower/storm chances through Tuesday especially over the mountains. Front is expected to stall over the area this weekend which may lead to low cigs both Saturday and Sunday in addition to valley fog...especially at night and during the morning both Saturday and Sunday. && .RNK WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Massanutten Resort

Where does the snow data for Massanutten Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Massanutten Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Massanutten Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
