Summary

A backcountry permit (required, fee applies) must be reserved in advance via Recreation.gov. There are no toilets (cat holes required), no potable water (boil/filter lake water), no fire rings (fires prohibited), and no picnic tables. RVs aren’t permitted. Set in a serene alpine basin beside Red Eagle Lake, the area features stunning mountain views and abundant wildlife, including moose and bears. Access is via a 7+ mile hike on the Red Eagle Trail. Best visited July–September for snow-free conditions and optimal trail access. Ideal for experienced, self-sufficient backpackers.
