Black Beauty Reservoir, also known simply as Black Beauty, is a Federal water supply infrastructure located in Mineral County, Nevada within the Hawthorne Army Depot. Constructed in 1952 by the US Navy, the primary purpose of this Earth dam structure is to provide water supply, with a storage capacity of 147 acre-feet. The reservoir is fed by Cat, Rose, Cottonwood, and Squaw Creeks, making it a crucial resource in the region.
With a dam height of 52 feet and a hydraulic height of 50 feet, Black Beauty Reservoir poses a high hazard potential and has a moderate risk assessment rating. The structure underwent modifications in 1955 and 1957 to enhance its hydraulic capabilities. The reservoir's spillway is uncontrolled with a width of 3 feet and features valve outlet gates for water release. Despite its importance in water supply, the condition assessment of Black Beauty is currently not available, highlighting the need for regular inspections and maintenance to ensure its continued functionality.
Managed by the US Army, Black Beauty Reservoir serves as a vital water resource in the arid Nevada landscape, supporting the surrounding communities and ecosystems. As climate change continues to impact water availability and quality, the efficient management and maintenance of structures like Black Beauty are essential in safeguarding this precious resource for future generations.
