Built in 1961 by the USDA NRCS, this Earth-type dam stands at a height of 14.9 feet and serves the primary purpose of flood risk reduction along the Prop Canyon river. Despite its integral role in managing water flow and preventing flooding, the dam is currently assessed to be in poor condition with a high hazard potential.
The dam has a structural height of 16.7 feet and a hydraulic height of 15 feet, with a spillway width of 200 feet. It has a maximum discharge capacity of 3830 cubic feet per second and a drainage area of 13.6 square miles. The dam's storage capacity is 510 acre-feet and it covers a surface area of 40 acres. However, with its condition assessed as poor and a high hazard potential, there is a need for regular inspections and potential risk management measures to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the structure in mitigating flood risks in the region.
