Located in Mesa, Colorado, Gobbo #1 is a privately-owned earth dam with a primary purpose of irrigation on Johnson Creek. Completed in 1973, this structure stands at 33 feet tall with a hydraulic height of 34 feet and a structural height of 44 feet, providing a storage capacity of 246 acre-feet. With a surface area of 13 acres and a maximum discharge of 137 cubic feet per second, Gobbo #1 serves multiple purposes including fire protection, stock watering, and small fish pond maintenance.

Despite being regulated by the Colorado Department of Water Resources, Gobbo #1 poses a significant hazard potential and has a fair condition assessment as of the last inspection in July 2020. The dam features an uncontrolled spillway and outlet gates comprising of slide gates and uncontrolled flow mechanisms. While the risk assessment indicates a moderate level of risk, no emergency action plan (EAP) is currently in place, raising concerns about preparedness in the event of a dam failure.

Given its critical role in irrigation and water supply in the region, stakeholders and water resource enthusiasts should closely monitor the maintenance and management of Gobbo #1 to ensure the safety and sustainability of this vital infrastructure in the face of changing climate patterns and increased water demand.
