Laguna Del Campo Dam, also known as Burns Lake Dam, is a state-owned structure located in Rio Arriba, New Mexico.
Built in 1940, this earth dam stands at a height of 36 feet and spans 500 feet in length, creating a reservoir with a normal storage capacity of 100 acre-feet. The dam serves primarily for recreational purposes, attracting water resource and climate enthusiasts to its 11-acre surface area along the Rio Brazos-Os.
Despite its recreational allure, the dam is classified with a high hazard potential and poor condition assessment, underscoring the importance of regular inspections and maintenance. The uncontrolled spillway, with a width of 28 feet, is a crucial feature of the dam's design to manage peak discharges of up to 1185 cubic feet per second. Its risk assessment indicates a moderate level of risk, prompting the need for effective risk management measures to ensure the safety and integrity of the structure for both visitors and local communities.
