530 FXUS65 KVEF 080736 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1236 AM PDT Mon Jun 8 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Gusty southwest winds and increased fire danger are expected through Tuesday. * A pattern shift brings lighter winds and a warming trend starting midweek. && .DISCUSSION...through Sunday. Another shortwave will move along the overall troughing pattern today, bringing additional southwesterly winds to the region. Elevated winds combined with low humidity and dry fuels result in elevated to critical fire weather conditions for much of the area. The greatest concerns today include most of southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, shifting to just northwestern Arizona tomorrow as the trough exits east and winds decrease over Nevada. See the FIRE WEATHER discussion below for more details. These winds also bring hazardous boating conditions to Lake Mead and Lake Mohave. There is a 70 to 80 percent probability of sustained wind speeds over 25 mph, which can produce waves of up to 3 feet. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 AM PDT/MST to 6 PM PDT/MST today. The trough lifts and high pressure builds over the western United States starting Wednesday. This pattern shift will result in lighter winds and warming temperatures, with highs 5 to 10 degrees above normal for mid-June by Friday. Expect widespread Moderate (Level 2 of 4) Heat Risk with areas of Major (Level 3 of 4) Heat Risk in the Colorado River Valley, Death Valley, and the Las Vegas Valley. This level of heat will affect anyone without adequate cooling or hydration. Also watching the potential for a push of moisture from the Gulf of California into the desert southwest this weekend. However, POPs remain less than 10 percent and model ensembles indicate little to no precipitation reaching the surface at this time. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Breezy south-southwesterly winds will continue overnight before winds back south-southeast after sunrise. Expect gusty southwest winds to pick up through the afternoon with speeds between 25 and 30 kts and directional variability between 190 and 230. May initially see a few gusts from 160 to 190 before they fully shift southwesterly. Gust speed and frequency will decrease after sunset. No operationally significant cloud cover. High temperatures will hover just below 100 degrees. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Gusty south-southwest winds will pick up across the Las Vegas Valley and Colorado River Valley with gust speeds peaking between 25 and 30 kts. KBIH can expect elevated diurnal winds. KDAG will gust from the west, with minor lulls in speed overnight. No operationally significant cloud cover. && .FIRE WEATHER...Widespread gusty southwesterly winds combined with low humidity and dry fuels result in elevated to critical fire weather conditions for much of the region. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for northwestern Arizona and most of southern Nevada today. For tomorrow, the trough responsible for these winds shift to the east, bringing the main focus for gusty southwesterly winds to northwestern Arizona. Therefore, the Red Flag Warning will remain in effect for all northwestern Arizona zones and the Nevada side of the Colorado River tomorrow as well. Conditions are expected to improve Wednesday onward as the system exits and winds weaken. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && $$ DISCUSSION/FIRE WEATHER...Meltzer AVIATION...Soulat For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter

Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Bear Mountain Resort

Where does the snow data for Bear Mountain Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Bear Mountain Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Bear Mountain Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
