940 FXUS65 KVEF 220654 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1154 PM PDT Fri Aug 21 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Above normal temperatures continue through next week. * Isolated storm chances linger into early next week, with best chances in northwestern Arizona and the southern Great Basin. && .DISCUSSION...through Friday. Ensemble guidance keeps the ridge of high pressure centered generally over southern NM through the forecast period. Any "cooling" that would otherwise result from subtle height falls will largely be offset by increased vertical mixing thanks to the southwest flow aloft. As a result, temperatures remain fairly steady with just a subtle cooldown possible Monday and Tuesday as moisture tries to creep back into the southeastern half of the CWA. Latest forecast has highs 2-8 degrees above normal, with the greatest anomalies across the eastern half of the area (closer to the high). Overnight lows remain relatively oppressive across the Mojave Desert as values range from 80-92 degrees. This keeps major heatrisk in Death Valley, the Las Vegas Valley, the Colorado River Valley, and southern Mohave County through Sunday. After the subtle reprieve on Monday-Tuesday, major to extreme heatrisk looks to return to these locations. A shortwave moving into the PacNW will reshape the ridge, resulting in a transition from southerly to more southwesterly flow overhead. This will reduce moisture across most of the CWA and promote more isolated convective activity through the weekend. Best chances (10- 20%) across the southern Great Basin and northwestern AZ. An influx of moisture early next week may spur increased coverage across our southeastern areas, but uncertainty remains. From mid-week and beyond, moisture drops back down and stays at modest levels, at best promoting isolated storm chances in northwestern AZ. Given the limited moisture, main concerns with any convection will be gusty outflow winds and dry lightning. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package... Expect south-southeasterly winds around 8kts through the night before weakening and becoming light and variable by the early morning. Southerly winds arrive in the late morning with breezier south winds arrive in the mid afternoon and stay through the evening. Gusts cut off after sunset as winds turn southwesterly and reduce. Temperatures look to break 100 degrees shortly after 17z, peak at 00z, and cool below 100 shortly before 04z. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Winds are reducing for all but KDAG which stays gusty until the late night. Wind look to stay light through the night and much of the morning. Gustier winds arrive in the afternoon with peak gusts above 20kts possible. Passing showers will affect the valley into the afternoon but exit in the late afternoon. Gusts at KDAG arrive slightly later in the early evening and look to last into the late night while the rest of the TAF sites see gusts cut off and winds lighten. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && $$ DISCUSSION...Woods AVIATION...Murdock For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter

Mountain & avalanche safety

Know before you go
Check today's avalanche bulletin from the regional avalanche center before any off-piste / side-country / backcountry travel. Conditions can shift dramatically between morning and afternoon on storm days.
Carry the gear, know how to use it
Beacon, shovel, probe. Practice companion rescue on a calm day, not during a real burial.
Mind the weather window
Heavy snow + wind builds wind slabs at ridgelines. The day after a storm is often the riskiest in the backcountry, even if the resort itself is open.
Respect closed terrain
Ropes are there for a reason. Even in-bounds, ducking a closure can trigger a slide that catches you and others below.

FAQ

About Snow Summit Mountain Resort

Where does the snow data for Snow Summit Mountain Resort come from?

Snowpack, SWE, 24-hour snowfall, and air temperature come from the nearest USDA NRCS SNOTEL station. Forecast comes from the National Weather Service / yr.no feed that Snoflo's iOS app uses.

How often is the snow report updated?

Snowpack and SNOTEL data are updated continuously by NRCS (typically hourly). The 15-day weather forecast is refreshed throughout the day. Snoflo caches and renders the most recent observation -- look for the "as of" timestamp on the snowpack hero.

What's the elevation at Snow Summit Mountain Resort?

See the Resort Metrics panel above for base / summit / vertical drop. The summit elevation drives snowpack accumulation -- higher summits hold snow longer through spring.

How is "% of normal" calculated?

Today's snowpack is compared to the average snowpack on this calendar day across every recorded year at the nearest SNOTEL. 100% means right on average; 130% is a big year; 60% is thin.

What ski resorts are near Snow Summit Mountain Resort?

See the Other Ski Areas pill grid at the bottom of the page for resorts within driving distance. The sister Other Ski Areas card in the Plan-a-longer-trip grid above shows the closest few.

Can I get alerts when fresh snow hits?

Yes -- snow alerts are managed in the Snoflo iOS app. Favorite this resort, set a snowfall threshold (e.g. "alert me when 6+ inches"), and you'll get a push the moment the SNOTEL crosses.
