Built in 2008 by designer Norman Aufderheide, this earth dam stands at 29 feet high and serves primarily for irrigation purposes. With a storage capacity of 454 acre-feet and a surface area of 24 acres, the reservoir on North East Creek provides water for fire protection, stock, small fish ponds, and recreation in addition to irrigation.
Despite being regulated by the Colorado Division of Water Resources, Joe King #2 has a low hazard potential and is considered to be in fair condition as of its last inspection in 2015. The spillway is uncontrolled with a width of 25 feet, and there are no outlet gates on the dam. With a moderate risk assessment rating, the reservoir is monitored for safety and maintained to ensure its continued functionality for the community of Whitewater and surrounding areas.
As an important water resource in the region, Joe King #2 plays a vital role in supporting agricultural activities and providing recreational opportunities. Its presence highlights the intersection of water management, climate resilience, and the need for sustainable infrastructure to meet the demands of a changing environment.
